An investigation by the specialized outlet Defense News, highlighted by Le Parisien, has revealed the existence of a covert air network linking Russia and Algeria, allegedly used to circumvent international sanctions imposed on Moscow since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Between March 2025 and April 2026, at least 167 cargo flights to Algeria were documented. Although officially operated by civilian companies, the flights are reportedly part of a logistics network supporting Russia’s military apparatus.
According to Defense News, several Algerian civilian and military airports regularly host these aircraft, effectively turning the country into a strategic transit and redistribution hub. The network is believed to help Moscow maintain its supply chains, particularly for sensitive equipment restricted under Western sanctions.
The investigation also points to the transport of advanced military equipment, including fifth-generation Su-57 fighter jets and Su-34 bombers. Satellite imagery cited by the outlet reportedly shows large cargo aircraft, such as An-124s and Il-76s, linked to the network and stationed at Algiers airport.
Beyond sanctions evasion, the alleged «air bridge» is said to be part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening Russia’s influence in Africa. It reportedly provides logistical support to the «Africa Corps», a unit tied to Moscow’s military presence across the continent.
A long-standing ally of Russia, Algeria remains one of Moscow’s largest arms clients. According to SIPRI, 73% of Algeria’s military imports between 2018 and 2022 came from Russia.
These revelations come amid growing pressure in Washington, where several political figures have called for the application of CAATSA sanctions against Algeria over its purchases of Russian weapons. In 2022, then-Senator Marco Rubio publicly advocated for such measures, a position echoed by other members of Congress in February last year.
