The traveling exhibition «The Gates of Moroccan History: Dynasties, Sovereigns, and Personalities» is set to captivate audiences in Montpellier from June 1 to 15, 2026, offering «a cultural and historical immersion through the ages», spanning from the Idrisids to King Mohammed VI. Hosted by the Coeur de Lionne association at Montpellier's City Hall, in collaboration with the Moroccan consulate, this event aims to «strengthen cultural ties» and «promote Moroccan heritage on the international stage».
Curated by Jamel El Hamri, a historian and associate researcher at Iremam-CNRS, the exhibition seeks to «showcase the richness and diversity of Moroccan cultural and historical heritage to a wide audience», according to the organizers. It is designed for Moroccans living abroad (MRE), as well as «French and international visitors eager to discover or rediscover the influential figures and pivotal moments that have shaped Morocco», they highlight.
Featuring «artistic works, historical archives, immersive reconstructions, and multimedia presentations», the exhibition delves into «the world of great Moroccan dynasties, Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, Saadians, and Alaouites». «Each segment of the exhibit spotlights iconic figures, significant events, and cultural, political, and social milestones that have contributed to the formation of Moroccan identity», a press release states.
In this vein, the exhibition highlights key figures from the dynasties that have shaped the nation's history, from «Moulay Idriss, founder of Fez, to King Mohammed V, a symbol of resistance and independence, through to King Hassan II, the architect of modern Morocco, and His Majesty Mohammed VI, the visionary behind an innovative and open Morocco». This initiative notably underscores Franco-Moroccan exchanges and cultural cooperation.
