Between 8 and 9 million sheep and goats will be available on the Moroccan market for Eid al-Adha 1447, exceeding estimated demand of between 6 and 7 million head, according to Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture.
In a statement issued, Thursday, as part of preparations for the holiday, the ministry said the recovery of the national herd was supported by the royal program aimed at rebuilding livestock stocks, improved weather conditions, and autumn and spring births. Morocco’s national herd is currently estimated at around 40 million head.
Authorities also announced that around 160,000 sheep and goat fattening units have been registered by the ONSSA as part of efforts to monitor the traceability and health of livestock intended for sacrifice.
According to the ministry, veterinary monitoring operations carried out across the kingdom have shown that the health situation of the national herd is «good». Inspections have covered livestock health, drinking water, animal feed, and veterinary medicines.
As of May 12, ONSSA services had conducted more than 3,275 field inspections, including laboratory testing of meat, feed, water, and veterinary products. These operations resulted in 10 violation reports.
The ministry also announced stricter controls on the transport of poultry waste to prevent its illegal use in livestock fattening, requiring prior authorization from veterinary authorities.
To reinforce livestock sales in urban areas, 35 temporary markets dedicated to Eid livestock sales will be set up across the country in coordination with local authorities.
