Madagascar, committed to the principle of the territorial integrity of United Nations Member States, has expressed its support for respect for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The position was set out in a joint statement issued following talks on Tuesday in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Madagascar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alice N’Diaye.
In the joint statement, Madagascar also reiterated its support for the exclusive role of the United Nations, as well as for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy to resolve the dispute over the Sahara.
In this spirit, Madagascar welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the United Nations Security Council, stating that «genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could be one of the most feasible solutions».
Along the same lines, Madagascar expressed its support for the autonomy initiative put forward by Morocco, which is part of the growing international consensus around the proposal, driven by the momentum initiated by King Mohammed VI.
