DR

The Republic of Panama on Friday reaffirmed in Rabat its support for the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole solution to the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, while also expressing its backing for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.

The position was expressed by Panama’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Arturo Hoyos Boyd, who is on a working visit to Morocco, following his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.

The Panamanian official stated that Panama considers the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, presented by the Kingdom, as the only serious, credible and realistic basis for achieving a lasting solution to this regional dispute, within the framework of the UN-led process and in full respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco.

In this context, he stressed that the Embassy of the Republic of Panama in Morocco fully exercises its consular powers throughout Moroccan territory, including the southern provinces.

The Panamanian vice minister also reaffirmed his country’s support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty, presented in 2007 and endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2797.

He further expressed Panama’s full support for the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in facilitating and leading negotiations, on the basis of the Moroccan autonomy proposal, with the aim of reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution for all parties.
