Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed around twenty new consuls to its missions in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. According to a list seen by Yabiladi, Mohamed El Hassani Idrissi has been named Morocco’s consul general in Sidi Bel Abbès, Algeria.
Despite the severance of diplomatic relations between Rabat and Algiers in August 2021, Morocco has kept its three consulates in Algeria open, in Algiers, Sidi Bel Abbès and Oran, to provide administrative services to Moroccans living in the country. Algeria, for its part, still maintains two consulates in Morocco, in Casablanca and Oujda.
As a reminder, former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said on August 24, 2021, when the break in diplomatic relations with Morocco was officially announced, that the consulates of both countries would continue to carry out their duties for Moroccan and Algerian nationals living on either side of the border.
In March 2024, Algerian authorities appointed two new consuls in Morocco. Three months later, Rabat, in turn, named a new official to head its consulate in Algiers.
