The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement yesterday that the Moroccan capital, Rabat, hosted an official ceremony on May 20, 2026, to unveil a bust of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human to travel into space, marking the 65th anniversary of the first crewed spaceflight.
The ceremony was held at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Rabat, providing an opportunity to celebrate a landmark human achievement that opened new horizons for scientific and technological progress.
According to the same source, the event was attended by representatives of Russian and Moroccan official circles, members of the diplomatic corps, public figures, and media representatives. The guest of honor was Oleg Platonov, a test cosmonaut with Russia’s Roscosmos agency, representing the new generation of Russian space explorers.
Yuri Gagarin is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in the history of space exploration, following his historic flight aboard Vostok 1 on April 12, 1961 — a milestone in the trajectory of scientific advancement and international cooperation.
The event carries particular symbolic significance as Russia and Morocco mark, in 2026, the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration on Deepened Strategic Partnership, as well as 25 years since the launch of Morocco’s first satellite, Maroc-TUBSAT, from the Soviet Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
