The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the TUI Care Foundation have announced the launch of a global partnership to promote sustainable tourism in heritage destinations, including Morocco.

The first activities under the partnership, which focuses on UNESCO World Heritage destinations, «will be rolled out in Morocco and Zanzibar, while also feeding into international reflection and exchanges», the UN agency said in a statement.

In Morocco, the initiative will support «the development of sustainable tourism around the Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and regarded as one of the country’s most iconic cultural landmarks».

According to the UN organization, the initiative aims to «encourage longer stays, strengthen opportunities for local artisans and tourism stakeholders, and develop new cultural experiences rooted in local heritage and traditions».

Training for guides, tourism entrepreneurs and artisans, along with the creation of cultural itineraries and new storytelling and interpretation tools, is expected to «strengthen the connection between visitors and the site’s living heritage». Particular attention will be paid to opportunities for women and young people.

The new partnership was sealed this week between the UN organization and the TUI Care Foundation, combining projects implemented on the ground with a broader international component dedicated to coordination, knowledge-sharing and cooperation on sustainable tourism practices.

Beyond local projects, the focus will be on strengthening international dialogue and cooperation around sustainable tourism in UNESCO destinations around the world, through communication activities, knowledge-sharing and the mobilization of public and private stakeholders.
