Zohran Mamdani, New York City's first Muslim mayor, is not hiding his support for Morocco's national team. With the FIFA World Cup set to kick off in just a few days, he has predicted that the Atlas Lions will go all the way and lift the trophy at the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
In an interview with The Guardian, in which he predicted the outcome for every team in the competition, Mamdani forecast a final between Morocco and France. His ultimate prediction: a Moroccan victory over Les Bleus to claim the world title.

Mamdani sees Morocco topping Group C ahead of Brazil before advancing through the knockout stages. According to his bracket, the Atlas Lions would defeat Mexico in the quarter-finals, overcome Colombia in the semi-finals and then beat France in the final.
This is not the first time Mamdani has publicly shown support for the Moroccan team. During the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Morocco, he was spotted at a Moroccan restaurant in New York watching Morocco's match against Comoros while enjoying Moroccan food and mint tea.
