A 31-year-old suspected ISIS (Daesh) supporter was arrested on Saturday in the city of M'diq on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack, Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) announced.
The arrest was carried out on the basis of intelligence provided by the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST). According to the BCIJ, the suspect had embraced the extremist ideology of ISIS and is believed to have been involved in the planning and preparation of a terrorist plot aimed at seriously undermining public order and the safety of individuals.
Preliminary findings from the investigation and security monitoring revealed that the suspect had engaged in preparations for so-called «lone wolf jihad» operations. Investigators say he had acquired expertise in the manufacture of explosives as part of plans to carry out attacks targeting individuals, public order and vital infrastructure.
The suspect has been placed in police custody pending further investigation conducted by the BCIJ under the supervision of the prosecutor's office in charge of terrorism cases. The inquiry aims to determine the full extent of his alleged extremist activities and identify any potential links to terrorist organizations operating in Morocco or abroad.
