The British Moroccan Society (BMS) marked its 50th anniversary on Saturday in Marrakech, celebrating five decades of friendship and strengthened ties between the United Kingdom and Morocco. The event brought together prominent figures from the diplomatic, business, academic and cultural spheres.
All funds raised during the celebration will support education initiatives in the High Atlas Mountains, particularly the learning centers in Talatast and Ijoukak, which were inaugurated in September 2025 and are already serving remote communities. Part of the proceeds will also help finance the construction of a third center currently in the planning stages.
Speaking at the event, British Ambassador to Morocco Alex Pinfield highlighted the important role played by the BMS in fostering people-to-people and cultural ties between the British and Moroccan communities over the past five decades.
Pinfield praised the Society’s contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries and recalled its involvement in relief efforts following the devastating earthquake that struck parts of Morocco. He noted that the organization worked closely with local authorities to support affected communities.
The ambassador also commended the Society’s commitment to education, particularly its support for charitable initiatives aimed at expanding access to learning in rural areas in partnership with local authorities.
For his part, researcher and BMS co-founder Ali Bahaijoub emphasized the importance of UK-Morocco relations and welcomed the progress achieved over the years across a range of areas of mutual interest.
He described the Society’s 50th anniversary as a significant milestone and highlighted its role in bringing British and Moroccan communities closer together through numerous social and charitable initiatives.
Bahaijoub also expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in bilateral relations and reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to promoting dialogue and strengthening ties between the two countries.
Founded in 1976, the British Moroccan Society works to foster friendship and cooperation between the United Kingdom and Morocco. Since its creation, it has sought to promote exchanges and mutual understanding through a wide range of social, cultural and educational initiatives.
