The Association of Moroccan Bar Associations has called for a nationwide suspension of professional activities from June 15 to 21, 2026, in protest over statements attributed to Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi.
In a statement, the association expressed its outrage at what it described as «incendiary and accusatory remarks targeting the legal profession and its institutions» during parliamentary discussions. It also announced plans to raise the issue with the head of government.
The week-long suspension was approved pending the launch of what the association described as «other large-scale protest actions». In response to the minister's remarks, a delegation from the association's executive bureau also held meetings with both majority and opposition lawmakers serving on the Justice, Legislation and Human Rights Committee in the House of Councillors.
According to the association, the discussions focused on recent developments surrounding the draft law regulating the legal profession, as well as the minister's comments.
The association also defended the Mutual Fund of Morocco's Bar Associations, describing it as «a social achievement that guarantees health coverage for lawyers and their families», operating under the legal framework governing mutual societies and the oversight of the Insurance and Social Welfare Supervisory Authority (ACAPS).
The call for a boycott has already begun to gain traction. On Thursday, Rabat Bar Association President Aziz Rouibah urged members of the local bar to join the action, while condemning the minister's statements as an attempt to «turn public opinion against professional institutions and cast doubt on the constitutional and societal role of the legal profession».
