The Republic of Burundi on Friday reiterated its steadfast and unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.
This position was set out in a joint communiqué issued following talks between Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation, Édouard Bizimana, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates.
Burundi’s top diplomat, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom, also reaffirmed his country’s support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco, describing it as the only credible and realistic solution to resolving this regional dispute. He also expressed full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate and conduct negotiations based on the autonomy plan.
In the same vein, Burundi noted with great satisfaction the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which establishes the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the basis for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable settlement of this dispute.
