The National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) held a workshop in Rabat on Thursday to present progress made under its «Forests of Morocco 2020-2030» strategy. The event also included meetings of the steering committees overseeing programs financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The meeting reflected ANEF's commitment to strengthening coordination and ensuring the effective implementation of the strategy. It was chaired by ANEF Director General Abderrahim Houmy, in the presence of Catherine Bonnaud, director of the French Development Agency (AFD) in Morocco, and Alexandre Anh Tai Huynh, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative in Morocco.

Speaking at the event, Houmy said more than €580 million had been mobilized to support the strategy, with contributions from over 10 international partners. Nearly €175 million has already been disbursed, representing almost 40% of the committed funding, or around 1.9 billion dirhams.

Alexandre Anh Tai Huynh praised Morocco's «innovative model», which focuses on biodiversity conservation, forest protection, and combating land degradation and desertification. «These are all key aspects of forest management, but Morocco has brought them together into a broader model that is unique to the country and to ANEF», he said.

For her part, Catherine Bonnaud highlighted the «crucial» partnership between the AFD and ANEF, noting that the strategy is centered on strengthening the resilience of Morocco's forest ecosystems and adapting them to climate change.

The workshop also provided an opportunity to review progress on legal reforms, forest management, territorial governance, ecosystem restoration, digitalization, and wildfire prevention.
