Italy's Court of Foggia has ordered a 46-year-old Moroccan national to stand trial for the alleged murder of fellow Moroccan Hayat Fatimi, who was fatally stabbed in August 2025. The trial is scheduled to begin on October 9 before the Court of Assizes in Foggia.

Fatimi, 46, was attacked on the night of August 6-7, 2025, outside her home in Foggia's historic center after returning from work. She was killed with 15 stab wounds, according to investigators.

Tariq El Mefeddel, who had previously been in a brief relationship with the victim and had already been reported by her to authorities, was arrested in Rome less than 12 hours after the killing. He also faces charges of stalking and illegal possession of a knife.

Fatimi had previously reported her former partner and was under the protection of Italy's «Red Code» legislation, which provides expedited procedures in cases of gender-based violence. Moments before the attack, she reportedly spotted her ex-partner and alerted the police, but officers arrived after she had already been fatally stabbed.

During Thursday's preliminary hearing, the Municipality of Foggia joined the proceedings as a civil party, alongside the anti-violence center where Fatimi had sought help and the victim's sister.
