The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group approved €205 million in financing for Morocco on Wednesday to support the implementation of the Railway Infrastructure Development Support Project (PADIF).

According to an AfDB statement, the project aims to strengthen the operational performance of the Kenitra–Marrakech rail corridor by extending the high-speed rail line and upgrading existing railway infrastructure.

Beyond improving mobility, the project is expected to encourage a shift toward more environmentally friendly modes of transport while generating significant economic benefits through shorter travel times and lower logistics costs.

PADIF includes the procurement of equipment to modernize rail infrastructure along the Kenitra–Marrakech corridor and around the Casablanca rail hub. The project covers the supply of new rails and track components for both the conventional and high-speed rail networks, with the aim of increasing the corridor's capacity and improving operational efficiency. It also provides support for project management, including contracting authority oversight, implementation supervision, and the monitoring and evaluation of the project's results and impact.

By supporting the development of resilient and sustainable transport infrastructure, the project aligns with the AfDB's four strategic priorities and its 2024–2029 Country Strategy Paper for Morocco. It is also consistent with Morocco's New Development Model and the Rail 2040 strategy, which aims to modernize the country's railway network.
