The office of Peru’s president-elect, Keiko Fujimori, confirmed on Tuesday that the country’s incoming government is committed to supporting the Kingdom of Morocco’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty over its southern provinces.

This position was expressed during a meeting between the president-elect and Morocco’s ambassador to Peru, Amine Chaoudri, who delivered a congratulatory message from King Mohammed VI on her election as president.

Fujimori’s office stated that the meeting was an opportunity to reaffirm the incoming Peruvian government’s desire to strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation with Morocco, as well as its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces. The same source added that Keiko Fujimori also underscored her full commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 2797, which establishes the autonomy initiative as the basis for reaching a final settlement to the regional dispute over the Sahara.

Peru announced in August 2022, in a statement issued by its Foreign Ministry, that it was withdrawing its recognition of the «Sahrawi Republic». However, the then left-wing president, Pedro Castillo, disregarded that decision just weeks later, marking in a post on X the first anniversary of the resumption of relations between his country and the Polisario Front.

Following Castillo’s removal from office and arrest in December 2022 after his failed attempt to dissolve Congress, and the assumption of the presidency by Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra, Peru decided in September 2023 to sever its relations with the Polisario.

Peru first recognized «SADR» in 1984, under the presidency of Fernando Belaúnde, before President Alberto Fujimori decided in 1996 to freeze that recognition. Alberto Fujimori is the father of president-elect Keiko Fujimori, who is expected to formally take office on July 28.
