The president of the Spanish company, Red Eléctrica de España that operates in the energy sector spoke in favor of the setup of a third submarine interconnection between Morocco and Spain.
According to Europa news agency, Jose Foldago, CEO and chairman of the partly state-owned company declared during a press conference on Thursday that the corporation «has not received any official instruction» to bring up the topic, however, he pointed out that «the project deserves to be studied».
«Europe is adopting a new model that renders more competitive the creation of a new cable. Northern Europe relies on the offshore wind energy, while Southern Europe and Africa prefer solar energy. These projects require a substantial amount of time before reaching maturity and with regards to the internal consumption growth in Morocco we should investigate this project in depth», declared Foldago. The CEO of Red Eléctrica de España added :
«It would be very important that the North and Africa submit to this new method that emerged after COP21 especially because the demand on energy will go crescendo.»
Meanwhile, Morocco is also studying the possibility of setting up a third submarine interconnection with Portugal where a 1,700 megawatts cable would be installed in the city of Faro as reported by Andalucía Información news paper.
Two 700 megawatts interconnection cables are currently linking Morocco and Spain. In 2015, the Moroccan government proposed to its Spanish counterparts to double the capacity of the interconnection cables by setting an additional 700 megawatts cable.
