Morocco will start importing Canary Island bananas following a new trade deal that was initiated by a Spanish delegation visiting Casablanca in the beginning of this year, Produce Business UK online newspaper reports.

The first Canarian-grown bananas were shipped to Morocco by the Association of Banana Producers of the Canaries (ASPROCAN). The first phase of the deal will also contain fruit grown of the Island, Tenerefe and La Palma.

The trade deal was signed in Casablanca earlier this year in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade (UCEX), the Canarian delegation and the main horticultural companies of distribution and maturation of Moroccan bananas.

The same source indicates that importing Canarian bananas «diversifies the sale of Canary Islands bananas outside of the Spanish market to other countries including Morocco which currently imports approximately 20 million kilos of bananas from different origin».
