Protests in Al Hoceima city are still ongoing. On Thursday 8th of June, protesters in the northern town around 5 pm clashed with police officers who fired tear gas at dozens of young people who took the streets to manifest against corruption, AFP reports as published by Le Monde.

According to the same source, around 5 pm, before Iftar time, a group of young people gathered to denounce corruption in the alleys. They were ruthlessly pushed back by the police to a crossroads in the neighborhood where several of them threw stones at the police.

An AFP journalist told Le Monde that at least two people were injured, a police officer hit by a stone and a protester who was beaten on the head with a stick. The police also arrested several protesters.

The clashes stopped almost two hours later, but the protesters promised to come back after breaking the fast, as the same source points out.

For the record, since October 2016 a wave of demonstrations have shaken the Rif region following the death of a fishmonger called Mohcine Fikri. The latter was crushed to death by a trash-truck trying to save his confiscated goods. A movement called «Hirak» emerged afterwards calling for reforms and denouncing corruption, headed by Nasser Zefzafi.

Zefzafi was arrested by authorities on Monday 29th of May after he interrupted a Friday sermon in a mosque located in Al Hoceima. He is accused of several crimes including undermining the security of the State.
