Following the march organized on Monday, the first day of Eid Al-fitr, 50 protesters were arrested by the police according to a local rights activist, reports Reuters. 39 police officers were sent to the hospital during the latest manifestation when the two camps clashed violently.
The Ministry of Justice, according to the same source did not give details about the arrests. However, Faisal Aussar, a member of the local Human Rights Association told Reuters that «police and gendarmes blocked access to Al-Hoceima from multiple directions. He said around 50 people were detained after police fired tear gas and used batons to deal with the demonstrators».
He added that «even in the presence of women, police used truncheons and threw punches to disperse the protests».
Calls for organizing a march on the day of Eid Al-Fitr were spread during the last week of Ramadan to demand the release of the «Hirak» detainees. On Monday videos and photos went viral on the internet of protestors and police forces clashing in the city of Al Hoceima and other villages in the region.
On Sunday, King Mohammed VI expressed his anger and dissatisfaction during government council meeting over the delay of a development project in the region of Al Hoceima.
