A very discreet person, who made a great effort not to stand out, he is about forty years old and an Imam who is detached from the Muslim community in Ripoll. This is what the Spanish media, including El Pais, said of Abdelbaki Es Satty.
The Imam of Ripoll, the hometown of the terrorists who allegedly planned for the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, is taking part of the investigation carried out by the Spanish authorities. According to AFP, «this religious person now appears as one who would have radicalized the young people held responsible for the attacks of Barcelona and Cambrils». The French news agency said the man's place, who has disappeared since Tuesday, was searched Saturday at dawn. The investigators wanted to take DNA traces and compare them with those of the human remains found in the house located in Alcanar. Remains that could be those of three men and not two as indicated so far.
Abdelbaki Es Satty had already been to prison for misdemeanors. According to El Pais, he was reported to have met in prison, which he left in January 2012, prisoners linked to the March 2004 attacks that had killed 191 people in suburban trains in Madrid.
«The last time I saw him was Tuesday and he told me he was going to see his wife in Morocco,» Nourddem, his roommate told AFP. «The explosion of Alcanar may have prevented a far greater drama : the police discovered more than 30 gas cylinders, which could have been used for the manufacture of explosive devices,» the news agency concluded.
