The Moroccan national who allegedly stabbed to death two people and wounded 8 others on Friday in Turku, Finland «was known to the Finnish intelligence as a suspected extremism», Reuters said on Monday quoting the Finnish authorities.

According to the same source, The Finnish intelligence service said in a communiqué that it was warned earlier this year about Abderrahman Mechkah, an 18-year-old Moroccan national who was living in an immigration center.

«According to the tip-off, the suspect seemed radicalized and was interested in extreme thinking», the Finnish intelligence service said pointing out that the warning did not «suggest a threat of an attack». It also stressed that Mechkah was not among the 350 people monitored in its terrorism prevention program.

The alleged terrorist is expected to appear in court on Tuesday along with the four other Moroccans held in pre-trial detention.

The Finnish authorities have considered the stabbing as the first terrorism-related attack in Finland as the country has been ranked by the World Economic Forum, the safest place in the world.
