A young Moroccan national residing in Conegliano, a town and commune of the Veneto region, Italy was arrested by the police after he attempted to enter the Aviano Air Base using a fake bade, Il Messaggero said on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old was driving a BMW 318 and was accompanied by two American soldiers. Although the base is geographically and tactically very important, the Moroccan man succeeded in entering it twice despite the reinforced security measures. «He used a fake badge in the name of a real NATO soldier, claiming that he is on duty,» continues Il Messaggero.

The suspect, who was heard by the police, was the subject of a long interrogation. His computer and mobile phone were seized.

The investigation «aims at determining how the man took possession of the badge and how he managed to bypass the check points».
