Professor Driss Guerraoui was elected a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, becoming the first Moroccan to join this prestigious institution, founded on 24 December 1779 during the reign of Mary 1 of Portugal.
The Academy of Sciences is a scholarly society dedicated to the advancement of science and learning, with the goal of promoting academic progress and prosperity in Portugal. It includes the fields of the exact sciences such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, medicine and earth and space sciences and letters which includes, among others, literature, philosophy, law, political science, history, geography, sociology, economics and finance.
Among its members are North American Arthur Lee-Francis Askins and Paul Krugman, Spain's Pedro Manuel Cadedra, Italy's Giuseppe Tavani, Venezuelan Guillermo Moron Montero, French Jean d'Ormesson, Russian Yevgeny Tchelichev, Switzerland's Karim Aga Khan, Mozambican Graça Simbe Machel, Englishman Thomas Earle, Chinese Lei Heong Iok and Choi Wai Hao, Emirati Sultan Ben Mohamed Al-Qasimi and Belgian Hervé Hasquin.
