Morocco is one of the least generous countries in the world according to the World Giving Index, which was issued recently by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), a UK registered charity. The North African kingdom is ranked 136th among 139 countries examined by the survey. The country has fallen in the ranking, since last year when it was positioned 123rd out of 140.
The report focuses on the period between 2012-2016 and is based on three main indicators. Accordingly, Morocco is ranked 97th when it comes to helping a stranger in need. It is positioned 139th, at the bottom of the list, at donating money. For volunteering, the survey suggests that the kingdom is 130th.
The data analyzed is based on the statistics provided by the Gallup organization, an American company that offers a range of research services related to management, human resources and statistics. 139 countries were evaluated, accounting for approximately 95% of the the earth’s population (nearly 5. 3 billion people).
Libya, the best performing country in the Maghreb region
The generosity index points out that 80 countries have seen a decline in assisting people in need, this concerns, most precisely, the emerging and developed countries. For donating money, developed countries stepped back in the ranking impacted by economic stability.
Regionally, Libya- though torn apart by civil war since 2011- occupies the first position in the Maghreb region (42nd globally), followed by Tunisia (92nd) and then Mauritania (130th). Morocco is fourth in the region, while Algeria is not included in the ranking this year.
Globally, Myanmar is ranked first for the 4th consecutive year(while the country is experiencing these days a massacre targeting the Rohingyas), followed by Indonesiaand Kenya. New Zealand is in the 4th place, while Germany is placed 19th next to Norway 20th, and Denmark 21st. France, on the other hand is ranked 67th and Spain 71st.
Morocco is among the least generous countries followed by Lithuania (137th) and then China (138th). Yemen is at the bottom of the list.
The report, however, shows that economic prosperity is not a determining factor of generosity. Indeed, only 6 states with a prosperous economy are among the 20 most generous countries in the world.
