The Civil Guard arrested a Moroccan national suspected of helping the perpetrators of the murderous attacks that took place last August in Catalonia, to prepare explosives, the Spanish Interior Ministry said on Friday, AFP reported.

The 24-year-old Moroccan, living in Spain, had close ties with several members of the cell that committed the attacks, especially Imam Abdelbaki Es Satty, who is considered the leaderof the group, the ministry said in a statement.

The suspect lent them his identity documents to buy oxygen peroxide, an essential ingredient for the manufacture of 100 kg of TATP (triacetone triperoxide), an artisanal explosive frequently used by jihadists in the Islamic State (EI) group, which can be made from commercially available ingredients. In addition, he provided vehicles to transport the components, according to the first elements of the investigation delivered by the release.

Two members of the cell, including Imam Es Satty, died in the accidental explosion of their workshop in Alcanar in southern Catalonia.

16 people died in the attacks and more than 120 were wounded. Six of the alleged terrorists were killed by the police. Two others, including one survivor of the explosion in Alcanar, are being held in pre-trial detention pending trial in Madrid, and two other suspects are under supervision.
