Established thirteen years ago, the Moroccan event, Biennale Marrakech, whose next edition was scheduled in February 2018, has a deficit of about 3.3 MADD, Le Monde Afrique reports today.
Christine Eyene, a critic of Cameroonian art, has recently been appointed curator of the next edition of the Biennale of Casablanca, scheduled for October 2018. However, that of Marrakech, scheduled to start in February 2018, is postponed. «There is no money,» says Amine Kabbaj, executive chairman of the event. «I have written twice to His Majesty, I do not know how to awaken people to the highest level. Culture is not a priority for this government», he said.
Created by Britain's Vanessa Branson, the billionaire sister of the Virgin Richard Branson group thirteen years ago, the event managed to raise 900,000 Euros from Moroccan sponsors in 2016.
The cancellation is a shock for the contemporary art community, which had voluntarily grafted on its calendar to organize its first edition in Marrakech. «I am sad that the Biennale is rejected, but I am convinced that it is only partly handed over,» believes Touria Al-Glaoui, its director.
