The Moroccan ambassador is accredited, according to the Mauritanian government spokesman

Mauritanian government spokesman, Mohamed Lemine Ould Cheikh said on Thursday afternoon in a press conference that the Morocco’s ambassador to Nouakchott was officially accredited.

«For the Moroccan ambassador proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco, indeed he had the official accreditation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania», he said during a press briefing.

Mohamed Lemine Ould Cheikh added that the diplomatic relations between Rabat and Nouakchott are considered as «good and excellent». It was also an opportunity for him to referrer to «the historical, cultural, economic and security factors» that ties the two nations mentioning «The Arab Maghreb Union», as an example.

The declaration of the Mauritanian official was reported later by the Mauritanian newspaper, Alakhbar and the Turkish news agency Anadulu.

For its part, Morocco has not confirmed the decision yet. Contacted by Yabiladi this Friday, 13th of October, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation refused to comment on the Mauritanian official’s statement. A source from the ministry told Yabiladi that ambassadors’ accreditations in general should follow an official procedure adding that the government of the hosting country must generally notify its counterpart.

Without this notification the statement of the Mauritanian government spokesman, the situation is unchanged, suggesting that tensions between Rabat and Nouakchott have not come to an end yet.
