A Moroccan-Algerian-born couple settled in Canada was acquitted on Tuesday, after being implicated in a terrorism-related case in Montreal, reports AFP quoted by the Algerian News Agency. Both individuals were held in pre-trial detention since April 2015, suspected of activities related to «terrorism».

They were accused of attempting to leave Canada «for the purpose of committing a terrorist act abroad», for «committing a crime for the benefit of a terrorist organization» and for having explosives.

El Mahdi Jamali, 20 years old, originally from Morocco, was found guilty yesterday possessing explosive substances. As for his wife, Sabrine Djermane, 21 years old from Algeria, she was completely acquitted.

Although they were both released, the couple will have to follow a strict. It is forbidden for them to go to the mosque they used to visit before their arrest.

During their arrest, the acquitted persons lived together and studied at the Collège de Maisonneuve in Montreal. Their arrest took place three months after the five boys and two girls from the same school went to Turkey. According to the families of the students, they have allegedly managed to enter Syria.

During the hearing, the prosecutor recalled yesterday that the young couple was planning to go to Greece, two weeks before their arrest, to join the jihadists of Daesh in Syria. A hypothesis refused by the defense lawyer.
