Peter Hoekstra, the new US ambassador to the Netherlands, has made headlines in 2015 following an interview conducted by the Dutch public channel NOS where he made anti-Muslim comments. After a phase of denial, the diplomat apologized this Saturday, reports the AFP news agency.

Indeed, on December 23, the American diplomat «denied his claims and said they were fake news before retracting,» said the same source. In a statement, Peter Hoekstra apologized saying :

«I made certain remarks during 2015 and regret the exchange during the Nieuwsuur interview. Please accept my apology.»

Peter Hoekstra said two years ago that Muslims had «the Islamic movement has now gotten to a point where they have put Europe into chaos. Chaos in the Netherlands. There are cars being burned, there are politicians that are being burned», said the same source.

Peter Hoekstra will take up his post as ambassador next month. He is also a former elected member of the House of Representatives.
