Uber Morocco, affiliated to Uber Technologies Inc. a peer-to-peer ridesharing, food delivery, and transportation network company headquartered in San Francisco, California, with operations in 633 cities worldwide, announced on Monday, 19th of February, that it is suspending its activities in Morocco, said a communiqué sent to Yabiladi.
The company said that it first started working in Morocco three years ago and it has tried to find suitable solutions to work with the authorities. But, «unfortunately, we have not been able to come up with straight and effective solutions to make the Uber app one of the existing transportation means».
«The current uncertainty does not allow us to provide a safe and reliable experience that meets the needs of our customers, drivers and passengers», it added in the same statement.
«As long as there is no real reform that would provide new solutions, we are forced to suspend our operations starting from this week», clarified the same communiqué.
The company confirmed that it would accompany the 300 drivers who relied on the application to earn their living and to «overcome the current difficult situation».
The company explained that it «wanted to work in Morocco» because the kingdom was «one of the 50 most innovative countries according to the Bloomberg Innovation Index». Uber started operating in Morocco on the 22nd of November 2016 with the objective of transporting people using 10,000 hybrid cars.
The company said that it would return to Morocco as soon as new rules are adopted.
