New York wants to pay women forced to remove their hijab

The city of New York has agreed to compensate three women who were forced by police officers to remove their veil when taking their ID photos. Thus, each of these women will be granted 60 000 dollars, indicated officials, this Wednesday, quoted by the daily newspaper Le Monde.

An agreement was reached earlier this week in a federal court in Brooklyn, where three arrests took place, said the three women’s lawyer, Tahanie Aboushi. According to the latter : «It’s a step in the right path». She also highlighted «the joint effort» that was made to improve the way police men work.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of the Judiciary of New York said that «the resolution of these cases was in favor of all parts». «Two of the women had been arrested in 2015, while the third one was held in 2012», recalls Le Monde.

The latter had filed a complaint against the municipality and the police of New York. New York police now have new guidelines : «Inmates wearing religious clothing on their heads have the opportunity to go to a separate room so that the photo is taken in a discreet manner by a police officer of the same sex», said the same source.
