Girona : The Moroccan Consulate appoints a lawyer for a Moroccan man assaulted by a police officer in Lleida

A young man was assaulted by an urban guard officer in a bar in Lleida (a city in Catalonia), Wednesday. The images of this attack quickly went viral on the internet during the weekend. The Moroccan consulate in Girona eventually intervened by appointing a lawyer to «defend the young man», said EFE news agency.

The consulate of Girona (the closest to the Catalan city) asked the mayor of Lérida for explanations as he is a «chief of the police and local authorities», diplomatic sources told EFE.

The Moroccan consul in Girona also met the Moroccan man «whose identity was not disclosed» after he received the necessary medical care and then appointed a lawyer to defend him.

The young Moroccan national and his colleague who was with him during the incident have already appointed a lawyer to file a complaint against the urban guard. The source contacted by EFE did not clarify whether the lawyer will collaborate with the consulate’s lawyer.

For the record, the video that went viral on the internet, the urban guard agent was hitting the victim while he was laying on the ground, before throwing a chair on him.
