Spanish companies based in Ceuta are «planning to leave the autonomous city for Morocco,» reported Thursday, March 29th, El Confidencial.

The economy of the entire city depends on the daily flow of goods at border posts. The website states that «60% of the goods the city imports are destined for resale in Morocco».

Several stores and businesses are starting to go bankrupt. This is notably the case of a shop tht sells perfumes operating for more than 74 years in the enclave. «The Moroccan clientele is essential, but it still struggles to access our city normally due to ongoing inconveniences. That's why we are forced to close our business,» says a shopkeeper.

«While our neighbors have renovated their borders, we have not put a single brick in recent years,» says another trader. After more than 20 years of waiting for the inhabitants of the city, the renovation of the border post should begin in 2019.
