The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture will allow the entry of Moroccan sheep and goats through the Bni Nsar border crossing from the 1st to the 22nd of August, said El Faro de Melilla, quoting Cope radio. It is a temporary measure followed by strict conditions.
Importing animals from Morocco and other North African countries will be strictly limited, fighting against Hand-foot-and-mouth diseases. The current initiative also prohibits importing animals that belong to species affected by the illness from Ceuta and Melilla to Spain.
The Ministry also pointed out that a veterinary technical agreement has been concluded to allow the importing of sheep and goats from Morocco to Melilla, on the al-Eid el Kebir.
Only registered farms can export animals to the two enclaves. Animals will be checked up before entering Melilla. Vehicles carrying these animals will be cleaned and disinfected.
For the record, in August 2017 the Melilla crossing border was closed for more than four hours during a demonstration initiated by Muslims who were demanding the entry of sheep a few weeks before al-Eid el Kebir. A complaint was recently filed against the measure imposed in 2017.
