Moroccan movie director Hind Bensari premiered her documentary «We Could Be Heroes» at the 2018 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival as part of the Toronto Film Festival hosted from April 27th to May the 6th.
The documentary received the Best International Documentary Award, allowing Bensari to become the first Moroccan and African filmmaker to win the prize.
Through her work, «We Could Be Heroes», Hind sheds light on the journey of two disabled childhood friends, Azzedine and Youssef, who were determined to participate to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
In an interview, the movie director explains that in Morocco, «the vast gap between rich and poor has only widened over the years, as state institutions kept failing to provide decent public education and healthcare to its citizens».
«Azzedine and Youssef’s dedication, the purity of their affection for each other, and their use of humor to overcome injustice and carry on provided me with a wealth of inspiration to write the story of their incredible journey to conquer what seemed to be an impossible project for outcasts without means: the Rio Paralympic Games».
Hind Bensari grew up in London and moved to Morocco after quitting her job in the UK. She directed her first documentary «475: Break the Silence» in 2014. Her work was crowd-funded and won critical acclaim from ‘The New York Times’ and ARD, Germany’s first television channel.
