Pro-Polisario activists demonstrated Thursday, 28th of June, in Laayoune as the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara Horst Köhler was in the city on his first visit to Morocco’s southern provinces.

In fact, Saharawis, a majority of young people and women, brandished the separatist flag chanting slogans for self-determination. The public forces intervened to disperse the demonstration.

In the morning, Köhler met with the region's Wali, Bouchaâb Yahdih, the former Polisario representative in Paris, as well as the city’s mayor, Hamdi Ould Errechid.

In the afternoon, he went to Mersa, a small city located 25 km away from Laayoune. In the evening, he dined with the Saharawi tribesmen who claim to publicly support the autonomy solution proposed by Morocco in 2007.

On Friday, the UN official is expected to visit Es-Semara, where he should attend a meeting held in the MINURSO’s office to held talks with elected representatives. Back in Laayoune, the former German president will be meeting pro-Polisario ONGs and representatives from associations that back the Moroccan stance.
