Moroccan World Cup footballer Amine Harit has reportedly been involved in a deadly car accident in Marrakech on Friday night, reports Sports Joe.
The Marrakech police confirmed that Schalke midfielder was behind the wheel when his car hit a pedestrian and killed him.
Reports, however, suggest that Harit's 14-year-old brother was the one driving when the accident occurred, killing a 28-year-old man. Passersby have stopped the 21-year-old international footballer and his brother from fleeing the scene, says the same source.
For the record, Harit was chosen by Atlas Lions' manager Hervé Renard to play in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The player made his first World Cup appearance in Morocco's game against Iran (1-0) on the 15th of June.
Reacting to the accident, Schalke (a German club) released a statement indicating that «on Saturday (June 30), sports director Christian Heidel managed to get in touch with Harit, who is still in shock».
According to the club, Harit was unable to prevent the tragic accident. «After receiving his testimony Harit was able to leave the police station. Currently, he stays with his family in Morocco and is mentally cared for», added the same source.
