Migrants are using the Mediterranean route to enter Europe making Spain one of the continent’s most used gateways, says the head of the EU’s border monitoring agency.
«If you ask me about my greatest concern, I say it’s Spain», Frontex chief Fabrice Leggeri told German newspaper Welt am Sonntag in an interview on Sunday.
In June 2018, nearly 6,000 migrants entered the Spanish soil, which is as much as what has been registered last year in the first six months of last year.
The migratory route from Libya has become increasingly guarded by Libyan coastguard patrols, leading migrants to use the route linking Morocco to Spain. «If numbers there [continue to] increase as they did recently, this route will become the most important one [into Europe]», added Leggeri.
In terms of numbers, Greece and Italy remain the main gateways to Europe. However, both countries recorded a sharp decline in the past two years.
