New York : Morocco calls for reforming the African Union's Peace and Security Council

During a ministerial meeting of the Peace and Security Council, held on September the 24th in New York, Morocco called for reforming the African Union.

«It is crucial to reform the Peace and Security Council, the main pillar of the African Peace and Security body which is important to the stability of the African continent», said Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.

The minister was inspired by some of the suggestions mentioned in Rwandan President Paul Kagame's report to ensure the improvement of the actions taken by the Council, such as reviewing the members of the body and strengthening its working methods».

Nasser Bourita also warned against «any attempt at political instrumentalization» of the AU's CPS Peace Fund, intended to finance 25% of peace support operations.

«Morocco will continue working to enhance the transparency and the improvement of the working methods of the PSC by offering its experience in peacekeeping operations, the fight against terrorism and violent extremism», he concluded.

For the record, Morocco officially joined the Peace and Security Council of the African Union on 31 March 2018 for a two-year term.
