Head of «Sharia4Belguim» organization, Fouad Belkacem has been stripped of his Belgian citizenship, reports Belgian daily L’Echo on Tuesday.

The Antwerp Appeal Court believes that the Imam has «failed to fulfill his obligations as a Belgian citizen», said the same source, adding that he still has his Moroccan citizenship.

While the preacher may be expelled to Morocco, his lawyer Liliane Verjauw believes that this decision «would be disastrous to his family and him too». «In such countries, democratic values are not always respected. I will do everything I can to avoid his deportation», she said.

The lawyer stated that she is currently «examining what can be done». «We can appeal against the court’s decision and maybe seek the help of the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg», she added.

For the record, Fouad Belkacem was arrested on the 16th of April 2013, alongside three other people, after an anti-terrorist investigation in Belgium.
