«This proposal is a message much stronger than the shared passion for football in the three countries, it is a strong message because it would unite for the first time two continents», said the head of the Spanish government. The king «appreciated the idea», he said, adding that the idea was also suggested to the Portuguese government.
For the record, when Spain announced that it is bidding to host the tournament, Portugal strongly denied the possibility of a joint-bid, stressing that «these are not the future plans of the country».
FIFA opposed the idea of a joint-bid between Morocco and Spain for the World 2026, arguing that the two countries are not on the same continent.
