Moroccan activists sign a petition against the Egyptian Islamic theologist Omar Abdelkafi

Egyptian Islamic theologian Omar Abdelkafi is expected to host a series of lectures on «culture, literature and religion», Saturday, November the 24th, at the Mohammed V National Theater in Rabat.

His visit, however, has been criticized by a number of scholars in the Kingdom. In fact, fifteen people have signed a petition entitled «No to hatred and extremism» against the Egyptian scholar.

Berber activist Ahmed Aassid, activist Fouad Abdelmoumni, publisher Bichr Bennani, Journalists Abdou Nerrada and Omar Brousky, the former spokesman for Darfur Aicha Elbasri, lawyer Abderrahim Jamai and Moroccan writer Driss Ksikess are among the people who signed the petition sent Wednesday to yabiladi.

These Moroccans believe that «Sheikh Abdelkafi» is known for spreading «extremist ideas and hatred against other religions and holy books». They accuse him of «admiring Nazi criminal Adolf Hitler» and claiming that «he was inspired by the Quran when writing his speeches».

«This misogynist preacher is known for his sermons that discriminate against Muslim women», said the petition, adding that «inviting this extremist scholar to Morocco cannot be justified».
