Set for months by the representatives of the Muslim community, the 29th of January commemorating the Great Mosque of Quebec shooting, will not be only about fighting against Islamophobia.
According to Radio-Canada, the «National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) suggests that the day must be dedicated to the fight against hate and intolerance in general». The Council removed the word «Islamophobia».
Thus, the so-called «National Day of Remembrance and Action against Islamophobia» would become the «National Day of Action against Hate and Intolerance», with the idea of including other cultural and religious minorities .
In an open letter sent November 22 to the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, Pablo Rodriguez, the NCCM expressed its belief that «the best way to fight against hatred and intolerance is to unite», according to Radio -Canada.
The latter, however, indicates that «the day will always be linked to the devastating attack in Quebec City». «We want to draw attention to the need of addressing the causes of Islamophobia and all other forms of xenophobia - hatred, intolerance and racism», said the NCCM President Ihsaan Gardee.
