Fined for defaming Agriculture Minister Aziz Akhannouch and former Finance Minister Mohamed Boussaid, journalist Taoufik Bouachrine is expected to pay 1 400 000 dirhams. The decision was pronounced by the Casablanca Appeal court on Wednesday for an article published on his newspaper Akhbar Al Yaoum and online newspaper Alyaoum 24.

According to AFP, the journalist was prosecuted in 2015, after accusing the two senior officials of «amending an article of the 2016 Financial Act to allow Akhannouch to take control of the Rural Development Fund, at the expense of the former Prime Minister, Abdelilah Benkirane».

Quoted by the same source, Younes Maskine, who has been heading the daily since the arrest of Taoufik Bouachrine last February, sees this new verdict as «another step in the process of silencing Akhbar Al Yaoum forever».

Last November, Taoufik Bouachrine was sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping, harassing and sexually assaulting eight women.
