King Mohammed VI received Tuesday evening the United Nations Secretary-General, says MAP news agency quoting a royal office communiqué.

«On this occasion, Guterres expressed to the sovereign his gratitude for the successful organization, in Morocco, of the Intergovernmental Conference on the adoption of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, marked by the adoption of the 'Marrakesh Pact'», said the same statement.

«Guterres noted Morocco's human rights achievements and its constructive role in terms of south-south cooperation and the implementation of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development and climate change», added the same source.

The UN chief also «lauded the Kingdom's generous and unwavering commitment to peacekeeping operations, mainly by the important contingents of the royal armed forces deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Central African Republic».

«The Moroccan Sahara issue was also discussed in the light of the Geneva round-table meeting on Dec. 5-6. In this regard, the monarch reiterated to Guterres the support of Morocco for efforts made by the secretary general and his personal envoy to reach a final political solution to this regional dispute», concluded the royal communiqué.

Antonio Guterres is the only leader who took part in the adoption of the Global Compact for Migration, to which King Mohammed VI granted an audience. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez did not have this opportunity.
