Norway's ambassador to Rabat, Merethe Nergaard said on saturday that «we shouldn't give in to fear» following the murders of the two Scandinavian tourists in Imlil, stressing that «extremist and radical forces are isolated».

«It is in the interest of everyone to remain united in the fight against extremism» Merethe Nergaard told MAP news agency, saying that Norway and Morocco will remain allies in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

«We are together in this fight to prevent such crimes from happening again, in Morocco and elsewhere» ,she argued before strongly condemning the «brutal terrorist act that targeted two innocent young girls who had come to live an adventure in this beautiful country».

She recalled that the two countries collaborated very closely following this tragedy, and that the embassy was informed of the investigation. The diplomat noted that Norway «greatly appreciates» the arrest of the alleged guilty «quickly».

«We trust the Moroccan authorities and we greatly appreciate the assistance provided» she said.

Merethe Nergaard also thanked the Moroccan people and government for their sincere and warm expressions of sympathy and support to the families of the victims and the people of Norway.

«The letters, flowers and other personal messages of condolences and sympathy have touched us deeply and are an expression of the true values of openness and hospitality of the Moroccan people» she said.
