Morocco's recent request for additional support from the Spanish government to better manage migration flows and intensify border control deserves to be taken into account, as it can help further strengthen collaboration between the two countries, Spanish daily El Pais wrote on Saturday.
«Morocco's list of requests to the Spanish government in exchange for increased surveillance of its borders includes proposals that should not fall on deaf ears», the paper stresses in an editorial.
They can be used to establish long-term programs to strengthen collaboration between the two countries and promote the development of the North African region, the Spanish daily notes.
The editorialist points out that Morocco is calling for assistance for the training of workers in key sectors of its economy, namely tourism and health, and a program to enable its university students to continue their studies in Spain as part of a «kind of Moroccan Erasmus».
For El Pais, Spain should put pressure on the European Union (EU) to translate these proposals into viable programs as soon as possible, by mobilising the necessary financial resources, adding that Spain's proven experience in the fields of health and tourism can guarantee better training for Moroccan workers.
«The idea of launching joint projects makes perfect sense today», particularly in the wake of the rise of the extreme right and xenophobia in Europe, which seek to demonise foreigners, according to the same source.
