The European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries adopted Wednesday, by a large majority, the Morocco-European Union fisheries agreement.

This decisive vote is the final step at the specialized committees of the European Parliament before the final adoption in plenary session, which is expected to take place on February.

According to a European parliamentary source in Brussels, the adoption of the agreement by 17 votes in favor, 7 against and 2 abstentions, reflects the position of the majority of the political groups represented at the European Parliament and is a logical continuation of the positive developments in the strategic partnership between Morocco and the EU.

Morocco and the European Union (EU) signed, on January 14, 2019, in Brussels, the fisheries agreement.

This agreement covers the fishing area from parallel 35 to parallel 22, namely from Cap Spartel in northern Morocco to Cap Blanc in southern Morocco.

It specifies the fishing areas and access conditions for the European fleet, with an increase in the financial contribution from €40.0 million to €52.2 million per year.
